Health & Safety – Focus on Falls from Height

The Health and Safety Executive of Northern Ireland (“HSENI”) has recently launched a campaign to focus on the dangers of working at height.

Since 2020, 9 workers have died in Northern Ireland in incidents involving construction work at height. The campaign aims to remind everyone of the need to use suitable access equipment, working platforms and edge protection. Work at height must, therefore, be carefully planned to consider the specific risks of each job (e.g. fragile roofs) in advance, and carried out using competent personnel who are appropriately supervised.

Whilst the campaign is primarily focused on the construction sector, it is clearly equally relevant to the farming sector as many farmers undertake construction works on farms each year. This could be building works or the maintenance of existing agricultural buildings or sheds.

HSENI has previously highlighted key messages relating to safe working at height on farms. Furthermore, one of the key messages in the Farm Safe Essentials campaign (which forms part of the 2020-2023 Farm Safety Action Plan) is to “Stay off Roofs”.There are 7 practical tips listed, along with a short video (and links to further resources), to provide the key information farmers need to work safely at height.
