Stephanie Johnston

Stephanie is a Senior Associate in the Healthcare Team at Carson McDowell, where she specialises in defending healthcare professionals in complex regulatory and disciplinary matters.

Stephanie qualified as a Solicitor in Northern Ireland in 2015 and joined Carson McDowell in June 2016, progressing to Senior Associate in August 2023. Stephanie was admitted to the Roll of Solicitors in the Republic of Ireland in January 2022, enabling her to advise clients across both jurisdictions.

Stephanie’s practice focuses on representing medical and dental professionals in investigations brought by regulatory bodies including the General Medical Council, General Dental Council, and the Medical Council (Ireland. She also provides advice and support to healthcare professionals facing criminal proceedings, inquests, investigations by the Northern Ireland Public Services Ombudsman and disciplinary investigations initiated by Health and Social Care Trusts under the Maintaining High Professional Standards in the Modern HPSS Framework. Beyond her professional discipline work, Stephanie acts on behalf of medical defence organisations and insurers in clinical negligence claims.

Passionate about supporting young professionals, she served on the Northern Ireland Young Leaders Committee between 2017 and 2025, holding the position of Chairperson between 2021 and 2023.

Outside of her legal practice, Stephanie contributes to the wider community as a board member of Young at Art, Northern Ireland’s leading arts provider for children and young people. She is also a member of the Association of Regulatory and Disciplinary Lawyers.
