The PSI – Guidance to Support Transparency of Pricing and Fees in Pharmacy Services

The Pharmaceutical Society of Ireland (the “PSI”) has recently published Guidance to Support Transparency of Medicines Pricing and Fees for Pharmacy Services (the “Guidance”).

The primary principle underpinning the Guidance is the entitlement of the public to transparent and accurate information about the cost of medicines and services accessed in pharmacies. The aim is to enhance public confidence in pharmacists, enabling informed decisions surrounding health and treatment.

The Guidance has been published to support pharmacists and pharmacy owners in meeting their responsibilities to the public and, in particular, the requirement to provide clear, transparent and accessible information in respect of pricing and fees associated with the dispensing of medicines and medical devices and, in respect of fees for pharmacy services. The Guidance seeks to develop the obligations contained in the PSI Code of Conduct in relation to accessible pricing information. The Guidance specifically references principle two of the PSI Code of Conduct which sets out that all pharmacists must give honest, relevant, and accurate information regarding the costs, benefits and risks of medicinal products, non-medicinal products and services.

The minimum requirement to ensure compliance, includes the placing of a visible and clear notice, detailing information on the cost of all professional services provided in the pharmacy as well as the provision of a receipt, for any transaction, detailing the costs associated with the supply of medicine or services.

The PSI commenced monitoring the implementation of the Guidance on 01 December 2025 following the implementation of the requirement to display a clear notice detailing information on cost. From January 2026, the requirement for pharmacies to provide detailed receipts for each transaction will be in place.
