Carson McDowell Advises F.R. Cathcart Limited in the Sale of Builders’ Merchant Business

09 September 2016

Carson McDowell advised F.R. Cathcart Limited in the sale of its builders’ merchant business to Newry-headquartered Murdock Builders Limited. Completion of the transaction occurred on 1 September 2016.

F.R. Cathcart (Enniskillen) has successfully operated as a family business since 1972 and has been regarded as one of the north’s leading independent suppliers of building materials. As a result of the transaction, Murdock now has 12 branches across Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. Twelve existing members of F.R. Cathcart staff transferred to Murdock’s 300-strong workforce as a result of the acquisition.

Richard Cathcart said: “The Cathcart family is confident that this is the right time to hand over the reins of the merchanting division of FR Cathcart Ltd to Murdock Builder’s Merchants. We are extremely proud of the business that we have built up since 1972 and the wonderful staff relationships that have been developed over those years. Looking to the future, our priority was to take the business to the next level, so it was vital that we found an independently-owned and progressively-minded company such as Murdock’s to take over our merchanting division.”

The Carson McDowell team was led by Gerard Armstrong, a partner in the firm’s Corporate team, assisted by Mary-Kim Doherty, Sarah Cochrane, Grant McBurney, Naomi Gaston, Rachel Craig and Ingrid Nixon.
